Wonky Weaver Cuttack Silver dye is derived from the botanical, Onosma hispidum (Alkanet Root). This can be used to produce silvery grey & pale violet colour shades. It is always recommended to first wash and scour the fabric prior to dyeing, and when using cotton, you need to pre-mordant in a tannin bath before mordanting with ALUM, or use Aluminium acetate for better dyeing results.  Also for animal fibres such as wool and silk, also scour, and mordant before dyeing.  You should expect shades of greys, purples and violet depending on the application.

Use at a level of 75-100% WOF.

The extracted pigment from alkanet can be used in cosmetics, soaps and inks, however the purple/violet colorant is not soluble in water, so use a solution of hot water and alcohol (you can use a small amount of vodka) to extract the pigment before adding to the dye bath.

Wonky Weaver® Natural Plant Dyes and Extracts are derived from botanical sources, and are both sustainable and ethically produced. We carefully source our dyes from suppliers we trust to uphold the highest of standards in quality.

Using plant dyes is very enjoyable and satisfying but does require some degree of experimentation to get the desired coloration of your fibres, yarns and fabrics. Results also depend on the type, weight and make-up of the fibre, and water quality, temperature and length of time in the dye bath amongst many other factors. The type of mordants, dye assists and modifiers will also affect the resultant colour of your dyed materials, and therefore we do not guarantee the results of our natural dye products.

Our dyes are supplied in 50g resealable pouches. Please store your dyes out of reach of children, out of sunlight and under dry conditions.
